Make it past the ATS
- Use standard section headings (Summary, Skills, Experience, Education) and a single-column layout with no tables, text boxes or graphics.
- Copy the job title and the top 6 to 8 skills from the posting into your resume wherever they are true for you.
- Start every bullet with an action verb and end with a number: volume handled, time saved, accuracy, money, people.
- Save as a PDF named Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf unless the posting asks for Word.
- Keep it to one page for under 10 years of experience; two pages only when every line earns its place.
- Put SQL and your BI tool in the summary line; those two keywords filter most data analyst postings.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I be a data analyst with no experience? Yes: a portfolio of 3 to 5 projects on real public data (CMS, Census, Kaggle), a certificate such as Google Data Analytics, and strong Excel plus SQL get interviews for junior roles.
- What should an entry-level data analyst resume lead with? Skills and projects, above education. Name the dataset size, the tools and the finding in each project bullet.
- Do data analysts need Python? Not everywhere: SQL plus Excel plus one BI tool covers many roles, but Python widens the postings you qualify for and automation bullets stand out.
