Jobs for International Students in the USA: F-1, CPT & OPT
F-1 students can work in the USA, but only through specific channels: on-campus employment, CPT during studies, and OPT after (plus the STEM extension). This guide compares them, shows where the jobs are and flags the traps. Rules are from USCIS and ICE SEVP (checked October 2026).

The four legal ways F-1 students work in the USA
Working outside these channels - cash jobs, gig apps, freelancing for clients - violates F-1 status.
- On-campus employment: up to 20 hours a week while school is in session (full time in breaks), no separate USCIS approval needed. Dining halls, libraries, labs, teaching and research assistantships.
- CPT (Curricular Practical Training): work authorization during your program for internships and co-ops that are part of the curriculum. Authorized by your DSO on your I-20, employer-specific, available after one full academic year for most students. A year or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility, so track the hours.
- OPT (Optional Practical Training): up to 12 months of work directly related to your major, usually used after graduation. Requires Form I-765 and an EAD from USCIS.
- STEM OPT extension: 24 more months for eligible STEM degrees with an E-Verify employer and a Form I-983 training plan.
Which fields hire international students most
Hiring concentrates where skills are scarce and degrees map to roles: software and IT (developer, support, QA, data), healthcare and health informatics, engineering, accounting and finance, logistics and supply chain, and research. Entry-level roles in these fields are listed every week on Ethic Leaf's sector pages (IT, healthcare, business and admin), which is a faster way to see real demand than reading forums.
How to find employers (a working sequence)
1. Start with your university: career portal, fairs, professors and alumni. These employers already process CPT/OPT paperwork. 2. Build a US-format resume: one page, no photo, no date of birth, no visa status in the header - results and tools instead. Use the free resume templates and examples on our Resume Templates page. 3. Apply to the role, not the visa. Most companies never write "OPT welcome" in postings they would happily fill with an OPT candidate. 4. Answer authorization questions honestly and simply: what you have (F-1 with OPT from June), how long it lasts (12 or 36 months), what the employer must do now (nothing beyond normal onboarding for OPT). 5. Track everything in SEVIS through your DSO: unemployment days on OPT are capped at 90.
Scams and traps to avoid
- Anyone selling a job offer, "guaranteed placement" or payroll without work. Paying to be put on a payroll is fraud and endangers your status.
- Day-1 CPT programs marketed as a way to keep working: heavily scrutinized and risky.
- Employers who want you to start before your EAD arrives, off the books "just for training".
- Unpaid internships framed as a favor: on STEM OPT paid, commensurate employment is required, and even on OPT unpaid work only counts in narrow cases.
How Ethic Leaf can help
Ethic Leaf lists thousands of US jobs by sector, role and city, has free resume templates with examples, and offers optional resume, interview and training services. Ethic Leaf is a staffing and career services company, not a law firm or immigration adviser. Immigration rules change, so always confirm your own situation with your designated school official (DSO) or an immigration attorney, and check uscis.gov for current rules and fees. Ethic Leaf does not sponsor visas and no service or guide guarantees a job.
Frequently asked questions
- How many hours can an F-1 student work? On campus, 20 hours a week while school is in session and full time during breaks; CPT and OPT hours depend on the authorization (USCIS).
- Can international students work off campus without CPT or OPT? Generally no; limited exceptions (severe economic hardship, certain international organizations) require separate approval.
- Do US companies hire international students? Yes, especially in IT, engineering, healthcare and finance. The practical blockers are timeline awareness and resume fit, which you control.
- Does working on CPT reduce my OPT? Part-time CPT does not; 12 months or more of full-time CPT eliminates OPT at that degree level (USCIS).
