Senior Substation Engineer

GoldCoast Energy Solutions is hiring for senior substation engineering work across protection and control (P&C) and physical design. The role leads the design, analysis, review, and coordination of high-voltage substation systems and supports project delivery, client coordination, compliance, and mentorship.

Responsibilities

Protection & Control Design: Develop and review P&C scopes, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts

Relay Settings & Coordination: Perform relay setting calculations, create setting files, run area protection studies, and model short-circuit fault and system impedances

Software & Analysis: Use power system study and configuration tools such as ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, SKM, or relay software (e.g., SEL acSELerator QuickSet, GE URsetup)

Regulatory & Compliance: Ensure designs meet NERC (e.g., PRC-023, FAC-008), IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards

Project & Field Support: Provide technical support during construction, installation, factory/site acceptance testing, and commissioning, including fault recorder analysis

Leadership & Review: Conduct peer reviews of junior engineer deliverables, manage outsourced engineering work, and lead technical client meetings

Physical Package Design: Develop and review complete high-voltage physical packages, including one-line and three-line diagrams, general arrangement (GA) drawings, section views, bus work layouts, and equipment plans

System Calculations & Studies: Perform and review technical calculations for ground grid design (IEEE Std 80), lightning protection (IEEE Std 998), conduit fill, voltage drop, and photometric/lighting analysis

Integration & Coordination: Oversee the integration of civil/structural foundations and Protection & Control (P&C) interfaces into the physical substation layout

Procurement & BOMs: Create, verify, and manage bills of materials (BOMs), equipment specifications, and procurement packages for air-insulated (AIS) or gas-insulated (GIS) equipment (transformers, breakers, switches, and bus systems)

QA/QC & Approvals: Review, sign off, and stamp design packages, technical reports, and "Issued for Construction" (IFC) drawings

Leadership & Mentorship: Lead client-facing design meetings, manage project schedules/budgets, and mentor junior engineers and CAD designers

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program

6 to 10+ years of progressive experience in electric utility substation engineering, power delivery, or P&C design

Active Professional Engineer (PE) license (or ability to obtain licensure within 12 months)

Familiarity with CAD and drafting tools like AutoCAD, MicroStation, or Bluebeam Revu

Knowledge of SCADA, RTU, HMI interfaces, and communication protocols

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equivalent power systems focus from an ABET-accredited institution

Active Professional Engineer (PE) License required

5 to 8+ years of dedicated experience in utility substation physical design

BSEE + Active PE License (multi-state or state-specific as required)

CAD/Design: AutoCAD, MicroStation, Bentley Substation, or Substation Design Suite (SDS) / Inventor

Analysis & Modeling: CDEGS, WinIGS, CYME, and photometric software (AGi32, Visual Lighting, DIALux)

In-depth knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, NESC, NEC, NFPA, and OSHA standards

Strong technical writing and communication skills
